To meet the growing demand for small waterproof connectors for on-board railway equipment, SOURIAU has developed a special connector: the SMS IP. The SMS IP is intended for on-board applications such as lighting, door controls, detectors, air conditioning programmes, the SMS cabs etc

SOURIAU´s SMS IP, intended for the growing need for small on-board connectors on trains, has the advantage of being designed to meet railway standards. It has extremely high fire and smoke resistance through the use of a special thermoplastic which has received an R23 / HL23 rating under new railway standard CEN/TS45-545. It has also received an I3F2 rating in accordance with NF F 16-101/16-102 standards. Whilst other solutions this size on the market are limited to 230 V, the SMS IP allows voltages of up to 500 V to be used, thanks to generous air gaps and creepage distances. Despite its very compact design, the contacts are protected, allowing connectors to be handled in complete safety. The design rules we applied were in accordance with the NF F 61-030 standard.
The SMS IP can be used in trains running in severe climatic conditions, since it has been tested under temperatures ranging from -50°C to +100°C. It can withstand shock and vibration in accordance the EN 61-373 class 2 standard. In its IP 67 version, the SMS IP has pre-fitted grommets to ensure wire-to-wire sealing. It is also available in an IP40 version, without grommets. The stainless steel steel coupling system is extremely robust and secure, and allows connectors to be fitted side by side without any difficulty. Creepage a clearance distances are also respected even when they are packaged tightly together. SMS IP can be used in four ways: extending cable runs, connecting to enclosures, through bulkheads or bracket mounted.
The SMS IP requires the same standard 1.6 mm contacts and associated crimp tooling as other Souriau product families: VGE1, SMS, 838, UTS UT0. This simplifies the process of training and procurement and encourages supply chain optimisation.
